Excellent point, Stephen, I'll work this into the article (which is still under massive flux—I'm building it slowly in a kind of compare/contrast manner with my basic workflow guide for the internal sequencer).

I've actually not worked with SEQ mode all that much until recently, because sometimes it's just a pain to go grab the macbook, hook it up to the M3, and fire up DP or LIVE just to capture some sudden inspiration. I figured it was time to really dig into SEQ mode and get comfy with it for faster mockup of song ideas. One way I really learn something well is to try to describe it to others while I'm researching and experimenting and figuring out how to do the typical real-world things you'd like to do with a given functionality. I'm finding the RPPR feature and the ability to use SysEx tricks both to have some great applications for live work. I can't believe I've ignored RPPR for so long, lol.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Korg M3: Using SEQ mode as a "super combi" for live performance

Hi shannon,

Nice article, thanks as usual. I only skimmed it, but one thing to consider:

Combis have a very important advantage for live jamming (of the sort where you are actually doing everything in real-time), especially when using the KARMA function, or when performing real-time sound edits with the RealTime Control Mode of the Control Surface: anything you edit in a Song cannot be reset reliably, or easily. (You can try to use the COMPARE button, but this is flakey for this sort of operation that has nothing to do with actual editing of sequencer data.) Whereas, with a Combi, you just reselect it, and voila - back to the starting point. This can be especially important for rehearsing something over and over. With a song, you either need to reload it from backup, or recopy it from the original combi to get back to the starting point. This may not be a problem with a set list where you're moving in a linear fashion…

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Korg M3: Using SEQ mode as a "super combi" for live performance

Stephen, thanks for deleting the other version which I saved my mistake. I added a heading note that this is not endorsed by Karma-Lab. I assume you prefer to maintain your distance from this article. If you want to remove or modify the note, that is up to you.

McHale, please can you review and correct this article? If you are happy with it, then please post the link to this Wiki in your forum thread. I don't want to steal your thunder … you are acknowledged at the bottom of the article. You are the pioneer who hit gold!
Thanks a lot for the table. Can someone please clarify the following entries in the table, shown in blue which indicates "added samples" … yet there were present also in the v1 resources:

182 Trumpet Vibrato
187 Trombone Vibrato
192 Trombone Fall
193 Trombone SlurUp

Maybe these samples are modified/improved - in which case can we color them in Green with a different caption to make it clear that they are "improved samples" and not "added samples"? Or maybe it's just a mistake in the table and these entries are the same samples as before?

Thanks,
Rob

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Korg M3: v1 to v2 MultiSound list

Rob,

Thank you very much for kind and comprehensive explanation. I agree the way you rearranged the page was more logical and generic. And since this was my first Wiki contribution I did not expect to get things right and was interested to get some tips and recommendations. Which I got. I also think I rushed a little a Wiki page immediately after solving an issue that I was fighting for several hours. It's better to wait a little, get a clear picture of what should be done and try to incorporate the information into existing structure.

Thanks again, and especially for your contribution to Wiki!

Vagif a.k.a. object

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Korg M3: Troubleshooting M3 Editor and USB MIDI

I was already in the middle of revamping the pages on the M3 Editor and USB MIDI (see recent history on the Wiki page) when you added your section specific to Windows 7 that in fact I was about to cover in a more generic way (see below). Also Stephen Kay has just edited and further improved my most recent changes. There is no ownership of pages - it's just one of those things about a Wiki site you and I have to accept.

I did add comments in the Wiki comment field when doing the two edits earlier today. The information that you added is a valid and welcome contribution … but the method is not specific to Windows 7, it applies to all versions of the USB MIDI driver on Windows XP, and Vista as well. So the "tip" needed to be incorporated in the main procedures section, not as a new section. Also the simplest method to achieve the same result is to run the Korg USB MIDI "Install Device" function within the USB MIDI software package as per the Korg documentation. This is covered in a generic way in new procedure 1 on the page which makes the more complex and slower method that yopu described using "update device driver" and searching for the installation directory redundant. We cannot document it both ways and "occam's razor" unfortunately applies on all Wiki sites - always do it the simplest way and only resort to a more complex method if the simplest method fails. I apologise if any offense was caused, that's never my intention and quite the opposite as I hope my 2,000 or more posts on www.korg-forums.com will show you.

Also don't take it personally - my "offensive behaviour" as a Wiki contributor also applies to other contributions for example from Stephen Kay and Shannong who wrote the original page we have both bveen editing. For example, Shannong/ Stephen had originally written a complex and risky procedure about editing the windows registry to overcome the "10 MIDI device problem". I cut the whole thing and replaced it with the recommendation to use the Korg Uninstall utility which achieves the same result in a much simpler and safer way.

The same thing happens if Shannong or Stephen Kay or anyone else has an improvement to make - they never as permission first, they just do it if they are sure that it adds someting of benefit. Once again I apologize if my endeavours to simplify and correct this Wiki article inadvertently caused offense to you. Please advise me if I should have gone about it in a different way?

My thanks to you, and all contributors.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Korg M3: Troubleshooting M3 Editor and USB MIDI

The best way to get the sysex message required for a particular function is not by reading the spec, but by hooking the M3 up to some sort of MIDI monitoring program, making sure it is sending sysex by moving various sliders, then activate and deactivate the parameter or feature you are looking for. You will see the resulting sysex message that you need to use. I just did, and this is how you turn on and off the Drum Track Button:

On: F0 42 30 75 41 00 00 20 00 0A 00 00 00 00 01 F7
Off: F0 42 30 75 41 00 00 20 00 0A 00 00 00 00 00 F7

The second last Byte is the on/off 01/00 part.

So typically, in external controller boxes that allow you to control sysex, there will be a way to enter the entire message shown above (which is in hexadecimal by the way), and somehow designate the last byte before the "F7" as being the variable byte.

Forum category: Karma Lab Wiki Forums / Requests for articles
Forum thread: Korg M3: How to turn drum track on/off with sysex on a midi foot controller

For what it's worth, I've pored through the MIDI Implementation appendix of the M3 Parameter Guide and can find absolutely no mention of how to switch the Drum Track on/off via sysex. I'm stumped. It looks like there are pretty significant limitations on sysex manipulation of anything to do with drum tracks—about all I can see is possible is the changing of the drum track pattern used in a combi/program that is itself not a drum track program.

For now, I've removed mention of the possibility of using sysex to turn the drum track on/off from that article. If anyone can figure out how to do this, please add it back to the article with the requisite details.

Forum category: Karma Lab Wiki Forums / Requests for articles
Forum thread: Korg M3: How to turn drum track on/off with sysex on a midi foot controller

This is not a request for a new article, but instead for an enhancement to an existing article.

In the article Korg M3: Controlling KARMA and other M3 functions with a foot controller, down in the Tips section, there is a note that "There is no CC number that will turn the DRUM TRACK on/off, but you can use sysex to do this."

This bit came from a post by Stephen Kay on the Karma-Lab forums, in Korg M3: General Discussions in this thread: Using a Midi Foot Controller to trigger Pads, Latch, Karma on/off.

However, Stephen didn't describe how this would be done; only that "It's a bit more involved…"

It would be great to flesh out this article with the details on how you can control the DRUM TRACK on/off via sysex—where do you go in the M3 to see the sysex command you need to configure on the midi foot controller?

Forum category: Karma Lab Wiki Forums / Requests for articles
Forum thread: Korg M3: How to turn drum track on/off with sysex on a midi foot controller
