Korg M3: Adding a simple click/metronome to a program/combi
korg_m3.jpg

Scenario

Sometimes, you just want to have a simple click-track/metronome in one of your programs or combis - you don't want to have a whole drumtrack, just a simple click. There is a way to use the drumtrack with a drumkit to get a simple metronome, you can use an effect to get it louder, or you can route it to an individual output (for sending to your drummer, or into a headphone mix but not the main PA).

Settings for Program Mode

  • Use the drum track pattern (P1) and set it to P391: Metronome 1 Note [All]
  • Choose the trigger settings as you want them
  • Chose the drum track program (P1) U-D-023 Misc. Perc. Kit (I can recommend that)
  • You can route it to an IFX (e.g. IFX5) to get it louder/use other effects or you can route it to an individual output
  • I can recommend to route it to a stereo compressor and set it's output to 100, otherwise you maybe won't hear it loud enough
  • You can route the output of the effect to an individual output (Bus setting P8 IFX Setup)

-> Now you can add a simple click when you press the drumkit on/off switch

Settings for Combi Mode

  • Put a drumkit in one of the 16 program slots, I recommend again U-D-023 Misc. Perc. Kit
  • Go to P1 drumtrack and choose pattern P391: Metronome 1 Note [All]
  • Check the output channel of the drum pattern, the MIDI channel of the drumkit has to be the same (you can check that on P3 MIDI Channel)
  • You can route the drumkit to an IFX to get it louder or use other effects
  • I can recommend to route it to a stereo compressor and set it's output to 100, otherwise you maybe won't hear it enough
  • You can route the output of the effect to an individual output (Bus setting P8 IFX Setup)

-> Now you can add a simple click to your combis when you press the drumkit on/off switch

There is also a way to do it with KARMA in Combi Mode

You use a Karma Module to do the same, so you can keep the drumtrack in your combis and still have 3 Karma Modules left.

  • You choose the same drumkit (U-D-023 Misc. Perc. Kit) put it in a slot and look for the correct MIDI channel, it should be anything else than 01, because you don't want to hear it when you play
  • You use the Karma GE 0023 Basic Arp Alt 1 (for the free module, e.g. Module D)
  • Route the Karma correct (e.g. module D: the drumkit is on MIDI Channel 03, the Karma Setup D MIDI I/O has to have Input and Output at "03" [P7-1])
  • Go to Karma Realtime settings (P0 - KARMA RTC) and set everything to "0", but VelAcct to "127" (check you are in the correct module and scene)
  • Go to P7-3 GE RTP D (if you used module D) -> 17-24 -> 22: Rhythm and set it to "008" instead of "004", otherwise, the tempo is twice as fast as normal
  • Then you should set a pad to MIDI channel 03 to trigger the drumkit, I think a "D3" is a good click (P1)
  • Turn Karma on and press the latch switch, then you can press the pad and there will be a click based on the "D3"

You can route the click to the effects and do the same things as it was with the drumtrack setting, but now the click is based on KARMA and you can use the drumtrack for other things.

Another similar way to do that with KARMA (for OASYS)

KARMA 2: Using a GE as a metronome

Conclusion

I use this setting in one of my combis to get a click, I don't need the drumkit option and I don't need all 16 program slots, so I can use one for a click. The problem it, that the click itself isn't loud enough to be heard good in a full combi, so I route it to an IFX and get it louder.

Another nice thing about it is that you can route the drumkit to the individual outputs, so another one could get your tempo, or you can get a click that's not on the PA,…

You can do the same with Karma, if you want to keep the drumtrack, but that's only possible in Combi Mode, because you can't add a second program in program mode for the KARMA click.
