User:shannong: House 101 crib notes
Note to anyone reading this: The following procedural steps are shorthand and some refer to specific M3 Editor files I've created for myself. If you've watched the House 101 Lessons you can probably decipher this to fit your own environment.
To set up initial combi, timbres, and GEs
- Fire up M3 Editor and choose a blank user combi, then Utility > Load > Enable:Combi > KarmaDev INIT Combi.m31combi > Open.
- Set up each initial KARMA module with the following general pattern
- Drums on Module A / CH 2:
- Timbre Param tab: Status > Int and MIDI Ch > 2.
- Play tab: Choose any drum kit for Timbre 1.
- Karma tab > Trigger sub-tab:
- Trigger > Module A: Note > 1st and Latch On. This prevents drum module from retriggering on chord/note changes in KARMA sensor zone.
- GE > A: Select Run, then choose any Drum GE.
- Play any keyboard note to audition the selected drum kit and drum GE.
- Adjust tempo and try different drum kits and drum GEs.
- Bass on Module B / CH 3:
- Timbre Param tab: Status > Int and MIDI Ch > 3.
- Play tab: Choose any bass program for Timbre 2.
- Karma tab > GE > B: Select Run, then choose any Bass GE.
- Play some keyboard notes/chords to audition the selected bass program and bass GE.
- Play tab > Timbre Mixer sub-tab: Adjust relative pan and volume of the KARMA modules.
- Try different bass programs and bass GEs.
- ??? on Modules C and D / CH 4 and 5:
- Timbre Param tab: Status > Int and MIDI Ch > 4 and 5.
- Play tab: Choose any program for Timbres 3 and 4.
- Karma tab > GE > C (and D): Select Run, then choose any GE.
- Play some keyboard notes/chords to audition the selected program and GE.
- Play tab > Timbre Mixer sub-tab: Adjust relative pan and volume of the KARMA modules.
- KARMA tab > Control sub-tab: Transpose value > Adjust in increments of 12 if the default output is too high or low. For example, a horn section plays too low when you trigger with a left-hand chord.
- KARMA tab > Trigger sub-tab: Quantize Window value > Adjust as needed for longer riff-oriented GEs to prevent triggering on an offbeat that sounds bad.
- Try different programs and GEs.
- Set up the sensor zone for each module. KARMA tab > Setup1 sub-tab > Key Zone: Set the Bottom and Top values for each module. Typical LH split point is *Top* = *B3*.
- Drums on Module A / CH 2:
- Set up the first lead timbre on Timbre 5 / Ch 1G.
-
- Timbre Param tab: Status > Int and MIDI Ch > 1G.
- Play tab: Choose any program for Timbre 5.
- Key/Vel Zone tab: Set the Bottom Key for Timbre 5 to the split point just above the sensor zone for the KARMA modules (C4 is the typical RH split point).
- Play some keyboard notes/chords to audition the selected program against the KARMA action.
- Play tab > Timbre Mixer sub-tab: Adjust relative pan and volume of the lead timbre against the KARMA modules.
- Try different programs for the lead timbre.
-
- Save your work so far.
-
- UTILITY > Write Combination > specify the category, name, and destination for the new combi > click OK. This saves the combi in the M3 itself.
- UTILITY > Save > Format:Combi > specify the file name > click Save. This saves the combi in the M3 Editor folder structure.
